If your vehicle was built in the last 5-7 years, it almost certainly has ADAS — Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors are all ADAS features. After certain repairs, these systems need to be recalibrated — and skipping that step can create real safety problems.
What ADAS actually is
ADAS is the collective term for the safety systems that use cameras, radar, LIDAR, and ultrasonic sensors to help you drive. The most common features include:
- Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
- Lane departure warning and lane keep assist
- Adaptive cruise control (holds distance from car in front)
- Blind spot monitoring
- Rear cross-traffic alert
- Parking sensors and rear/360° cameras
- Automatic high-beam control
- Traffic sign recognition
These systems rely on cameras and sensors placed around the vehicle — front grille, windshield, side mirrors, bumpers, quarter panels.
When ADAS needs recalibration
ADAS needs recalibration any time a component that houses or affects a sensor is:
- Replaced (windshield, bumper, mirror, grille, radiator support)
- Removed and reinstalled during a repair
- Bumped hard enough to knock the aim off (even minor collisions)
Some specific triggers:
- Windshield replacement → forward camera needs recalibration
- Front-end collision → radar and camera calibration
- Alignment change → some manufacturers require recalibration
- Suspension work → can affect sensor angles
- Battery disconnection → some vehicles need re-initialization
Two types of recalibration
Static calibration happens indoors with specific targets placed at exact distances from the vehicle. The shop uses a scan tool to guide the process. Takes 30-90 minutes per system.
Dynamic calibration happens on the road, at specific speeds, following a specific route, so the sensors can learn against real conditions. Takes 15-45 minutes of driving.
Some vehicles need only static, some need only dynamic, and some need both. The shop’s scan tool tells them which is required for your make and model.
Why it matters
An out-of-calibration camera doesn’t know it’s out of calibration. It still reports data — the data is just wrong. That means:
- Automatic emergency braking may activate too early, too late, or not at all
- Lane assist may steer you toward the wrong line
- Adaptive cruise may misjudge distance to the car in front
- Blind-spot monitoring may miss vehicles or false-alarm constantly
These systems are only as safe as their calibration.
What to ask your shop
Before authorizing a repair:
- “Do you handle ADAS recalibration in-house?” — In-house is faster and cheaper. Sub-outs can add days.
- “What systems on my vehicle need recalibration?” — Any modern shop should be able to check the manufacturer’s position statement in minutes.
- “Will the recalibration be documented in the invoice?” — Yes. You want proof that it was done in case of any future warranty or safety question.
Insurance covers this
ADAS calibration is a legitimate part of the repair and is covered by insurance. Any shop that tries to skip it to save time is cutting a corner that affects your safety. Don’t accept that.
If a shop tells you calibration isn’t needed after a repair that clearly should require it, get a second opinion. The manufacturer’s position statement is public — a proper shop will look it up in front of you.
